Must-haves before obtaining FAA A&P Certificate

*** Prerequisites to attending the Airframe and/or Powerplant, courses, you must have FAA Form 8610-2 signed off by the FAA before day three of class. ***

If you are in the US Army and wish to use Army Credential Assistance Program (CA) you must submit a ticket no later than 45 days via ArmyIgnitEd.  THIS IS THE FIRST STEP TO GET THE FUNDING FOR THE COURSE.  Download the Step-by-Step Guide here


Option One:

Getting your FAA form 8610-2s with Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC)


Contact the current credentialing program manager for USAACE by email here, and tell them you will be attending Matta Aviation Services A&P Prep Course and need the FAA Form 8610-2s. He/She will enroll you in Airuniversity and after some online test and on-the-job training (OJT) packet is filled you will get your "tickets" (FAA Form 8610-22). ***Note usually takes about two to four weeks to complete depending on how committed are you***


Option Two:

Below are Steps to follow that will expedite your process of obtaining the FAA Form 8610-2 from your local FSDO

To get your FAA Form 8610-2s based on Military Experience you will need the following items:


1.  Copy of your SRB to demonstrate you have at least 30 months of experience based on your MOS 15 Series for FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P), or 18 months of experience for either FAA Airframe or Powerplant.  ***Military personnel can verify the creditable experience on Airman Certification Section 2 Figure 5-135 Military Occupational Specialty Codes (MOS) of 8900.1 CHG 675 Rev. 1 here.  (U.S. Airforce starts Pg. 21, U.S. Army starts Pg. 29, U.S. Navy starts Pg. 30, U.S. Marine Corps starts Pg. 35, U.S. Coast Guard starts Pg. 37)***


2.  Copy of your Driver’s License front and back (must have the STAR watermark, this demonstrates you are a US Citizen), Passport, or Birth Certificate.


3.  Letter of Recommendation (LOR) from your Commander, Maintenance Officer (151A), or an FAA A&P stating that you meet the experience requirements under 14 CFR §65.77.  Example letter here.


4.  Fill in and describe qualifying work experience on the “Table I-III Experience Requirement Worksheet.” Must meet at least 50% of the specified areas to qualify. (pay attention to the “Teaching Levels”)

       a. (1) Level 1 requires: (i) Knowledge of general principles, but no practical application.

       b. (2) Level 2 requires: (i) Knowledge of general principles and limited practical application.

       c. (3) Level 3 requires: (i) Knowledge of general principles, and performance of a high degree of practical application.  (Table I, Table II, Table III)


5.  Get an FAA Tracking Number (FTN), you will need this to take any written exams or Oral and Practical Exams. You can get it free here.  

6.  Fill and print two copies of the FAA Form 8610-2.  (DO NOT CHECK THE BLOCKS ON THE TOP LEFT NAMED “MECHANIC”, “AIRFRAME”, AND “POWERPLANT”).  These will be filled out by the FAA Safety Inspector during your interview if you qualify for the rating.  Both the FAA Form 8610-2 and the instructions to fill these forms are attached to this packet.


7.  Contact your local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) to set an appointment with an Airworthiness Directives Safety Inspector. You can find your local FSDO here
